When Amazon sent me the proof copy of my newest release, Golden Horizons, the first thing that I noticed is the gray strip across the cover that says, ‘Not for presale.’ This copy is for your eyes only, to check for mistakes so that you may make changes. The gray strip printed on the cover ensures that you will not resell this edition.

(Yes, you must request and pay for a proof copy of your print book to be sent to you. The publisher will not send you one automatically or for free. This service is optional, but highly recommended because it is better to make changes to your book before it is sold to the public rather than later, if the need should arise.)

In this post, Why Fiction Authors Need to Order Proof Copies Before Publishing, we’ll explore the essential checks to make sure your book is polished and ready for sale.

1) First, look at the front cover and the book spine.

Make sure the coloring of the front cover and the back cover line up with an even spine. If you see any weird lines, off-coloring, or if the images of the front cover wrap around too much or not enough, the formatting of the book cover may need to be adjusted.

For my novella, Golden Horizons, I wanted to make sure the golden hues of the cover matched the coloring on the computer. When I printed off a copy of the cover at home the hues came out looking too pink. Happily, when I received the proof copy, it was the exact golden hues I had wanted. If the coloring had been off, which does happen, the coloring of the cover may have needed to be adjusted.

2) Next, take a look at the interior text.

  • Start at the beginning. Make sure your acknowledgements, your copyright page, your dedications are exactly the way you want it. Does it look right visually on the page?

  • Make sure that your page numbers start with the right number. Chapter one should start page number one. Make sure the following page numbers are correct and do not randomly skip a few numbers. Although it may seem tedious, you should go through every page of your book to look for errors.

  • Check to make sure that your book is not missing any pages or whole chapters. Believe me, this has happened. One of my stories was in a collection with a group of authors and for some unknown reason when we received the proof copy, one author’s novella was missing three chapters out of the center of her story! Even though it had been formatted and uploaded just fine, there had been a publishing error. After speaking to the publisher, the collection had to be re-uploaded and sent to the publisher a second time. So don’t assume that the whole text of your manuscript is in there. You really have to check.

3) Now go to the back of the book.

  • Take a look at the ‘about the author’ page with your picture and your bio. Is it the right sizing? Is there enough spacing? You don’t want it to look too crowded.

  • If you have a ‘Dear Reader’ letter, make sure the text is properly formatted and that it looks nice with enough paragraphs and spacing so it is easy on the eye and doesn’t look like a large intimidating block.

  • If you have other books advertised in the back matter pages with your book covers, blurbs, and links to buy, make sure they all look right. Are the book covers and text a good size, easily readable, with the right spacing?

  • Count how many pages are blank in the very back of the book. Are there too many? Just make sure you go through the proof copy of your book page by page to make sure it is exactly the way you want it.

4) Finally, look at the back cover.

Make sure that your picture and your bio are above the barcode box and that nothing is partially blocked. Your back cover blurb should be properly spaced with enough margin around all sides, so it does not look scrunched.

If the text looks too crowded on the page, you might consider shrinking the size of the font on the back cover, but you do want it easy to read. Another option is to revise and cut down the text. Better to have fewer words than a giant block of tiny print that no one can read. The cover as a whole must appeal to the reader visually to entice them to buy.

I include my novel’s tagline at the top of the cover in bold. Then the back cover blurb beneath, with my author photo and bio at the bottom above the copyright block.

If everything looks correct after a thorough review of the spine, covers, and interior pages, you can go back onto your Amazon account and make your book available for sale so that your readers can order their copies.

But if you want to make changes or find something wrong, then fix those items and order another proof copy.

You want to make sure this book is exactly the way you want it before making it available for sale to the public. Sometimes you might have to order two or three ‘proof’ copies before you’re satisfied that everything is exactly right.
